Virtual Engineering
Customer- and market-related product development is crucial to the competitiveness of companies today. Product development thus becomes increasingly more significant within a company, whereas it is confronted with constantly growing demands. The complexity of products is steadily increasing due to new technological possibilities. Moreover, customer demand for quality is growing, while available development time is decreasing because of increasing competition at the same time. This race also causes the constant shortening of product lifecycles. This means to companies that they have to be able to develop products within a short time, with as low as possible costs and high quality.

The use of new technology and processes in digital product development offers substantial potential for growth and stability. This requires the integration of methods and tools of computer simulation, visualization, and virtual, augmented or mixed reality as well as distributed computing.
The related R&D areas the research institutions of the INI-GraphicsNet are dealing with include virtual design, virtual prototyping, digital mock-ups (DMUs), visualization and exploring of engineering simulations, interactive simulation of mechatronic systems, digital factories etc., just to mention a few of them.
